In conjunction with the Birthplace of Country Music’s exhibit I’ve Endured: Women in Old Time Music, now on display at the Museum of East Tennessee History, the Knox County Public Library’s Tennessee Archive of Music Image and Sound present a Celebration of Women in Old Time Music. The centerpiece of the weekend will be a tribute to Alice Gerrard, featuring a screening of the documentary about her life, You Gave Me a Song, and a rare live music set at The Bijou Theatre.

Alice Gerrard is a singer, songwriter and instrumentalist who has performed and advocated for old-time and bluegrass music for over 50 years. Her four recordings with Hazel Dickens during the 1960s and ’70s influenced a generation of women musicians from Laurie Lewis to the Judds. Collaborator on many recordings with Tom Sauber and Brad Leftwich, Matokie Slaughter, Kay Justice, Peter Rowan, Dirk Powell, Beverly Smith, The Harmony Sisters, Piedmont Melody Makers and many others, she also founded the Old-Time Herald music magazine, is an inductee into the IBMA Hall of Fame, and a Grammy nominee.

Her most recent project is her memoir Custom Made Woman, published by UNC Press and released in early Dec. 2025. It was listed by Rolling Stone as one of their top 100 picks for best music book in 2025. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/best-music-books-2025-1235484147/wings-the-story-of-a-band-on-the-run-paul-mccartney-1235484153/

Two of Alice’s favorite musicians to play and collaborate with are Tatiana Hargreaves and Reed Stutz. Both will perform with her at The Bijou Theatre. A fine young player and singer, Tatiana Hargreaves is a wonderful and talented presence on the old-time and bluegrass music scene. She brings to all of her music (besides amazing chops) a true curiosity, an understanding and appreciation for the breadth and depth of the well from which she draws—and the possibilities of who knows what might be. Tatiana has a couple of wonderful solo recording projects as well as several with banjoist Allison de Groot, and with old-time string band Hard Drive. She tries to divide her time between touring and teaching at UNC Chapel Hill.

Mandolinist, guitarist, banjoist and singer, Reed Stutz brings instrumental fluency and a unique voice to old time and bluegrass music. He draws heavily on traditional bluegrass from the 1940s and 50s, as well as old time fiddle music, with a particular knack for the mandolin style of Bill Monroe and those who followed in his footsteps. He has performed and collaborated on recordings with Bruce Molsky’s Mountain Drifters, Jason Carter, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes and many others.

This historic night is made possible in part by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission in partnership with the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville, the Friends of the Knox County Public Library, and the Bijou Theatre.
